Meat and bone meal (MBM), which is produced from the recycling process of rendering, is used by nutritionists as a protein and energy supplement in poultry and swine feed and may also be utilized as an ingredient in the manufacture of pet food. Using meat and bone meal in animal feed is a high-protein solution that gives the feed rations of livestock a boost that cannot be obtained by crop feeds such as corn.
This additional boost in protein allows farmers to grow their livestock more quickly with less feed, as the cooked meat and bone meal is more easily digestible for the livestock’s bodies. Also, meat and bone meal contains high nitrogen and phosphorus levels, which allow for its inclusion as an organic fertilizer, and in the production of some other types of fertilizers.
Meat meal is the dried end result of the rendering process. Baker Commodities only accepts high-quality raw materials that are heated to kill pathogens that may be present, and then dried and ground to a particle size that allows for incorporation into feed rations and fertilizers.
This process produces a quality-grade meat meal that is highly digestible and can actually be a more abundant source of protein than the whole meat from which it was made. For example, whole chicken contains about 70% water and 18% protein. After rendering, the resulting chicken meal contains just 10% water and 65% protein. That is nearly four times more protein than a whole chicken.
Using protein meal from recycled sources also provides an environmentally conscious approach to protein production. It ensures that animal by-products get new lives outside of the landfill and go right back into the food chain in a healthy, eco-friendly way.
