Biodiesel Manufacturing

Biodiesel Ingredients & Feedstocks for Biofuel Production

Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel commonly made from fats and oils like used cooking oil, animal fats, and vegetable oils. The quality of those inputs matters—because consistent feedstocks help drive consistent fuel performance.

At Baker Commodities, we specialize in producing high-quality biofuel ingredients used across today’s low-carbon fuel market. Our finished products are key inputs for biodiesel manufacturing, as well as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chains. Through proven collection, rendering, and processing, we help turn recovered oils and fats into reliable, specification-focused ingredients that fuel producers can count on.

If you’re looking to buy dependable ingredients for biodiesel production or other renewable fuels, we can help with product information, availability, and logistics.

Yellow Grease, Tallow and Lard

Baker Commodities provides a few different materials used in biodiesel and renewable diesel production. These include:

  • Yellow grease: Produced from recycled vegetable oil from deep fryers
  • Tallow and lard: Produced from animal rendering processes for various by-products

Yellow grease, lard and tallow are truly recycled and renewable alternative fuels. These fuels are highly sustainable because they use recycled materials as a base instead of relying on virgin materials. Supplies of biodiesel can be renewed indefinitely because rendered materials and oil/grease are domestic co-products of the growing U.S. animal agriculture and foodservice sectors.

How It Works

Once raw materials are collected and cleaned, they’re processed into consistent, specification-focused ingredients that biodiesel producers rely on. Our team manages the steps needed to remove impurities and prepare fats and oils for downstream conversion into biodiesel, renewable diesel, and other low-carbon fuels.

In biodiesel production, those prepared feedstocks are typically converted through a chemical process called transesterification, where glycerin is separated and the remaining product is Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME)—the technical term for biodiesel. The separated glycerin can be further refined for use in soaps and other products.

By focusing on reliable inputs, we help fuel producers run steadier operations and make high-quality biodiesel and other renewable fuels.

New Leaf Biofuel

In California, Baker Commodities operates New Leaf Biofuel, focused on collecting and processing used cooking oil from more than a thousand local restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, casinos, and other commercial kitchens throughout the state.

New Leaf supports the renewable fuels industry by turning waste cooking oil into clean, consistent feedstocks used in biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chains. By recovering and preparing these recycled resources, we help keep valuable materials out of the waste stream while supplying the key ingredients fuel producers depend on.

If you have used cooking oil to recycle—or you’re sourcing quality, processed feedstocks for biodiesel and other renewable fuels—reach out to our team.

Greenhouse Gases

In addition to using renewable energy sources, biofuel also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Once the finished product is pumped out into holding tanks, it is then sold to local fleets and distributors. These fleets use biodiesel blended with diesel in their engines, which directly displaces diesel fuel usage, thus reducing greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions by up to 80% and allowing everyone to breathe a little easier!

Fun Facts About Biofuels

Biofuel is a particularly powerful product. Here are a few facts about it:

  • About 1 billion gallons of biodiesel are produced annually.
  • Biodiesel is added to petroleum-based diesel to reduce emissions and improve engine life.
  • Biodiesel lowers particulate matter by 47%, reduces smog and makes our air healthier to breathe.
  • Biodiesel reduces hydrocarbon emissions by 67 percent.
  • Biodiesel reduces lifecycle greenhouse gases by 86%.
  • For every unit of fossil energy it takes to produce biodiesel, 5.5 units of renewable energy are returned, the best of any U.S. fuel.
  • Generates at least $3 billion for the U.S. economy rather than spending on foreign oil
  • Global biofuels production cuts consumption of crude oil by 1 million barrels a day.
  • Most gasoline & diesel fuels in North America and Europe are blended with biofuel.
  • The U.S. biodiesel industry supports 31,000 green jobs.
